Downtown life

Getting Around Downtown

Walking, the train to DC, and the parking rules for homes without a driveway.

The short answer

Can you live in Downtown Fredericksburg without a car?

For daily life and a DC commute, mostly yes: Downtown is compact, and the VRE station is in it, with a weekday train reaching Union Station in about an hour and a half for $13.45. Weekend trips, big grocery runs and anything outside Downtown still usually need a car — VRE doesn't run on weekends.

The train

What does the VRE commute from Downtown look like?

Station parking

Where do you park for the train, and is there a resident lot?

VRE lists seven lots around the station. One is reserved for City residents with a decal, and only one allows overnight parking.

Parking is free and at your own risk; police randomly check the lots.

Parking at home

How does parking work if your house has no driveway?

On-street parking is open unless signs say otherwise. Residential permit zones exist only where neighbors petition for them, so most Downtown blocks don't have one.

Buses

Is there a bus?

FRED, the regional bus, stopped collecting fares on all routes on 28 February 2022 and reviews that each year; when fares are charged they are $1.25 ($1.75 VRE connection).

The trade-off

What still needs a car?

The train and your feet cover daily life and a weekday DC commute; most errands outside Downtown, and any weekend trip north, still need a car — and a house without a driveway means on-street parking on busy event nights.
